Football's next great rivalry arrives on the world stage

For years, the football world has debated who will inherit the Messi-Ronaldo throne. On June 26, 2026, in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the two leading candidates will settle the argument on the biggest stage of all. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé will go head-to-head when Norway face France in Group I of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

This is no ordinary group stage fixture. Group I  which also includes Senegal and Iraq is the consensus Group of Death of this tournament. And the Matchday 3 clash between Norway and France at Gillette Stadium is expected to decide who finishes top. Remarkably, despite multiple Champions League encounters at club level, Haaland and Mbappé have never faced each other in international football. June 26 will be their first time.

Two strikers, two very different profiles

Mbappé, now 27 and captaining France from Real Madrid, enters the 2026 World Cup as a proven tournament predator. He has 12 World Cup goals in 14 matches, including the 2022 Golden Boot with eight goals and a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. He won the 2018 World Cup at age 19.

Haaland, at 25, is the most devastating goalscorer of his generation but this will be his World Cup debut. The Manchester City striker became the fastest player to reach 50 Champions League goals and 100 Premier League goals. His international record is almost absurd: 55 goals in 48 caps, making him the fastest player in history to reach 50 international goals. His goal-per-game ratio of 1.15 per international match nearly doubles Mbappé's 0.58  but Mbappé has the one thing Haaland lacks: proven World Cup pedigree.

Norway's return after 28 years in the wilderness

Norway have not appeared at a World Cup since 1998 in France, when they memorably beat Brazil 2-1 in the group stage. Their qualification for 2026 was nothing short of extraordinary  a perfect 8-0-0 record, scoring 37 goals and conceding just five. Haaland alone contributed 16 goals in eight qualifying matches, the most by any European player in the entire cycle.

Norway's squad is far from a one-man show. Martin Ødegaard, Arsenal's captain, orchestrates from the middle. Alexander Sørloth, Sander Berge, Antonio Nusa, and Jørgen Strand Larsen provide depth and quality throughout.

France enter as the world's number one ranked team

Didier Deschamps has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his final tournament as France manager. Beyond Mbappé, France boast Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga from Real Madrid, William Saliba from Arsenal, and a wave of exciting young talent including Rayan Cherki, Bradley Barcola, and Désiré Doué.

Their Group I schedule: France vs Senegal on June 16 at MetLife Stadium; Norway vs Iraq on June 16 at Gillette Stadium; France vs Iraq on June 22 in Philadelphia; Norway vs Senegal on June 22 at MetLife Stadium; and the blockbuster Norway vs France on June 26 at Gillette Stadium, Boston.

Who will score more goals at World Cup 2026?

Bookmakers favour Mbappé for the Golden Boot at +600, compared to Haaland at +1400. The logic is straightforward: France are expected to go deeper in the tournament, potentially playing seven matches. But Haaland's qualifying form  16 goals in eight matches  is historically unprecedented. His hunger to prove himself at a World Cup for the first time could be the defining motivation of the entire tournament.

Deschamps himself acknowledged the spectacle: "Kylian and Haaland are two players recognised around the world. They will be two of the contenders to be the top scorer."
