Cristiano Ronaldo's Final World Cup: Can Portugal Win It All?

Cristiano Ronaldo has made it official. The 2026 FIFA WorldCup in the United States will be his last. If he is named in Portugal's 26-mansquad  as expected  he will become the first man in history toplay in six FIFA World Cups, a record he will share only with himself, havingalready matched the previous record of five in Qatar. At 41 years old, with 145international goals and 213 international appearances, Ronaldo arrives at hisfarewell tournament with one ambition: to win the trophy that has alwaysescaped him.

The Career That Defies Logic

Ronaldo's international statistics require context to bebelieved. 145 goals in 213 appearances. Five Champions League trophies. TheEuro 2016 title. Three Premier League championships. Three Liga titles. A SaudiPro League reign that has generated extraordinary statistics well into his late30s. The World Cup  the one major international title that has eluded him stands as the only meaningful gap in a career that otherwise definescompletion.

Portugal's best World Cup finish under Ronaldo has been fourthplace in 2006, when a young Ronaldo appeared alongside Figo and Deco. Sincethen, three World Cup quarter-final exits. One European Championship in 2016 —which Ronaldo watched from the sideline injured for most of the final. Thetrophy shapes the entire remaining arc of his legacy.

The Starting Dilemma

Portugal's most charged question is not whether Ronaldo willbe at the tournament  it is whether he should start. The debate betweensentiment and football logic is as acute as it has ever been. Ronaldo'spressing, tracking back, and contribution in phases without the ball no longermatch his peak. Younger Portuguese strikers  Gonçalo Ramos, Rafael Leão, DiogoJota  offer a different profile. Coach Rui Jorge faces the same dilemma everyPortuguese manager has faced: honouring a legend while maximising the team'scompetitive potential.

Portugal's Actual Strength

Beyond the Ronaldo debate, Portugal are genuine contenders.Rúben Dias and Gonçalo Inácio form one of Europe's best defensive partnerships.Bruno Fernandes, still at Manchester United, is one of the most completemidfielders at the tournament. Bernardo Silva is the technical brain who makesevery Portugal team function. Leão at AC Milan has recorded 25 goals and 18assists this season. Even without a perfect Ronaldo, Portugal are dangerous —and Group K, featuring Colombia, DR Congo, and Uzbekistan, is entirelywinnable.

The Messi Parallel

Football's greatest rivalry produces one final chapter in2026. Both Messi and Ronaldo at their respective last World Cups, playingsimultaneously. Both in their 40s (or approaching them). Both seeking the onetrophy that will define the ultimate dimension of their legacy. Thetournament's most compelling subplot requires no hyperbole: this is historyunfolding, and it will not happen again.
