Will Messi Play at World Cup 2026? His Last Dance

Lionel Messi has not officially confirmed his place at the 2026 World Cup — but every sign points to one last ride. At 38 years old, with 900+ career goals and a legacy already cemented, this is the story of football's greatest farewell.

The greatest player in history faces one final question

Lionel Messi has won everything. Eight Ballon d'Or awards. Over 900 career goals. A World Cup trophy hoisted under the Lusail sky in 2022. Yet one question still dominates the football world as summer approaches: will Messi play at the 2026 World Cup?

As of April 2026, Messi has not made an official announcement. But all evidence  from his continued international call-ups to the custom Adidas boots reportedly designed for him  suggests Argentina's number 10 will take the pitch for a record-breaking sixth FIFA World Cup. Born on June 24, 1987, Messi will be 38 years old when the tournament kicks off on June 11 and will turn 39 during the group stage itself.

If he plays, the 2026 World Cup will almost certainly be Messi's last. And it will happen on American soil, in the country where he now lives and plays his club football. You could not script a more poetic ending.

What Messi has said about 2026

Messi has walked a careful line between hope and realism in every public statement. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni declared: "For the sake of football, he has to be there. It's not me who decides  it's up to him, his state of mind, his physical condition." Scaloni added that he would do everything possible to ensure Messi is part of the squad.

The strongest hint may not be verbal at all. Adidas has reportedly designed a special edition boot called El Último Tango  The Last Tango  in white, gold, and sky blue. It is widely interpreted as the final chapter of a partnership that has defined football merchandising for two decades.

Messi's current form at Inter Miami

Far from winding down, Messi has been remarkably productive in 2026. He scored his 900th career goal on March 18 against Nashville SC, becoming only the second male footballer in history to reach that milestone. He also appeared in both of Argentina's March friendlies  against Zambia on April 1, he started, scored, and assisted in a dominant 5-0 win.

Argentina's group draw and path to defence

Argentina have been drawn into Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. On paper, it is a favourable draw for the defending champions. They face Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City, Austria on June 22 in Dallas, and Jordan on June 27 in Dallas. Argentina are heavy favourites to top the group.

The deeper question is whether Argentina can become the first nation to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1962. The core of the 2022 champions remains intact Emiliano Martínez, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández, and Julián Álvarez all return. Messi would complete the picture.

A record sixth World Cup and chasing Klose

Should Messi be named in the 26-man squad  expected by May 30 he will become one of only two men to play in six FIFA World Cups, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. His existing records are staggering: most World Cup appearances (26 matches), most minutes played (2,314), most Man of the Match awards (11), and the only player to win two Golden Ball trophies.

He currently sits on 13 World Cup goals, three behind Miroslav Klose's all-time record of 16. A strong tournament could see Messi claim that record too. The emotional undercurrent of Messi's potential final World Cup is impossible to ignore. In September 2025, during what may have been his last competitive home match for Argentina  a 3-0 win over Venezuela  Messi broke down in tears during warm-ups. His sons joined him for the walkout.
