World Cup 2026 Group Draw: All 12 Groups and Key Match ups Explained

The FIFA World Cup 2026 group draw, held at the Kennedy Centerin Washington D.C. on December 5, 2025, produced 12 groups of compellingfootball. With 48 teams competing for the first time in tournament history, thedraw created story lines that will unfold from June 11 through June 27. Here is everything you need to know about every group, the key matchups to watch, andwhich teams face the most difficult paths to the knockout stage.

Group A: Mexico, South Africa, New Zealand, Bolivia

The tournament opens in Group A at Estadio Azteca on June 11 with host nation Mexico taking on South Africa  a rematch of the 2010 WorldCup opener. Mexico are heavy favourites to top the group. South Africa qualified through a dramatic playoff win and will draw huge support. NewZealand and Bolivia face elimination from the first match day.

Group B: USA, Türkiye, Australia, Paraguay

The United States face their toughest group since 2014. Türkiye qualified for their first World Cup since 2002, bringing a technically gifted squad under a new coach. Australia reached the 2022 semifinals. Paraguay are physical and organised. All four teams can beat each other. This is the group most likely to produce a surprise exit from a co-host nation.

Group C: Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, Haiti

Group C is one of the tournament's most intriguing draws.Brazil, under Carlo Ancelotti, are the headline act and strong favourites. But Morocco reached the 2022 semifinals and have lost none of their defensive discipline. Scotland return to the World Cup after 28 years and open against Brazil  their opponents in 1998. Haiti return after a 52-year absence.

Group D — H Summary

Group D (Canada, Bosnia, Angola, El Salvador) is arguably the most open group in the tournament, with Canada as heavy favourites as co-hosts.Group E (Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Curaçao) is Deutschland's opportunityto announce themselves as genuine title contenders. Group F (Spain, Uruguay,Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia) pairs the Euro 2024 champions against two-time WorldCup winners Uruguay in what is the most glamorous second-place race in the draw. Group G (England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama) sees England facing anotherCroatia reunion  they've met at each of the last three major tournaments.Group H has Spain, and Group I is the consensus Group of Death with France,Norway, Senegal, and Iraq.

Group I: The Group of Death — France, Norway, Senegal, Iraq

Group I is where football dreams go to die. France enter as the world's No. 1 ranked team, seeking a third world title. Norway return to the World Cup after 28 years with Erling Haaland, who scored 16 goals in eightqualifying matches  the most by any player across all confederations. Senegal are defensively elite and defeated France in the 2002 World Cup opener. Iraq qualified last of all 48 teams and carry the emotional weight of a 40-year absence. The June 26 France vs Norway match at Gillette Stadium in Boston is already the most anticipated group stage game of the entire tournament.

Groups J, K, L

Group J (Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan) is the defending champions' draw, and it is kind. Group K (Portugal, Colombia, DR Congo,Uzbekistan) pits Cristiano Ronaldo's farewell tour against Colombia's explosive attack and two debut nations. Group L (England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama) is a group England must win and yet historically have found ways to complicate.

How 32 Teams Advance

For the first time, 32 of the 48 teams will advance from the group stage. The top two from each of the 12 groups qualify automatically for the Round of 32 — accounting for 24 teams. The remaining 8 spots go to theeight best third-placed finishers across all groups. This means finishing third is no longer necessarily a death sentence. A team with two wins and one loss,or seven points from three draws and one win, will almost certainly advance.
